The Latest: San Francisco officer shot, critically injured

SAN FRANCISCO - The Latest on a Halloween night shooting involving a San Francisco police officer (all times local):

11:30 a.m.

Officials say a San Francisco police officer wounded in a Halloween night gun battle was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak says the 41-year-old officer usually works in the crime scene investigation unit, but was assigned to a patrol beat on a busy Halloween night for the department. Andraychak said the officer is a 9-year veteran of the department. He didn't release the officer's name.

Andraychak said it's unclear how many revelers were in the area at the time of the shooting shortly after midnight.

The gun battle erupted in the city's Castro neighbourhood, a popular gathering spot on Halloween night that has experienced violence in the past. Andraychak says it appears the incident was not connected to any Halloween celebrations.

San Francisco authorities say a police officer and an armed suspect were wounded after exchanging gunfire during Halloween celebrations.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak says officers on patrol were flagged down by a person reporting a suspicious vehicle in the Castro neighbourhood early Wednesday.

He says as the officers approached the vehicle there was an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and at least one officer.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports both were hospitalized, but their conditions were not immediately known.

Officials released few details on the events leading up to the shooting.

Several streets were closed as police investigated.
