The Latest: LA chief comments on controversial traffic stops

LOS ANGELES - The Latest on a newspaper report that Los Angeles police are targeting black motorists (all times local):

12:48 p.m.

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore says he hopes a newspaper report that a special police unit is pulling over a disproportionate number of African-American motorists sparks a broader conversation about how best to interpret the data.

Moore says Thursday that the report doesn't specify whether the vehicle stops are done respectfully and constitutionally. He says if an officer only pulls someone over because he or she is black, that would warrant an investigation and possible disciplinary measures.

A Los Angeles Times investigation found that Metropolitan Division officers deployed for crime-suppression pull over black drivers at a rate well above their share of the population.

Mayor Eric Garcetti says he's ordered Moore to scale back vehicle stops and prioritize other elements of the city's crime-reduction strategy. Moore says that's already happened.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says he's concerned about a newspaper report that a special police unit is pulling over a disproportionate number of African-American motorists and he's ordered the department to scale back vehicle stops.

The Los Angeles Times reports Garcetti said in a statement Wednesday that he's ordered the chief of police to prioritize other elements of the city's crime-reduction strategy.

A Times investigation found that Metropolitan Division officers deployed for crime-suppression pull over black drivers at a rate well above their share of the population.

The mayor has called for an audit of Metropolitan traffic stops. A similar audit by the Police Department's inspector general is already underway.
