The Latest: 1 dead, car theft suspect hurt in Malibu crash

MALIBU, Calif. - The Latest on the crash of a suspected stolen car after a pedestrian was run over on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu (all times local):

12:10 p.m.

A pedestrian is dead and a car theft suspect is hospitalized after a brief pursuit and fiery crash involving multiple vehicles on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Bob Boese says a deputy spotted a reported stolen car at Zuma Beach Wednesday morning and called for backup units.

The deputies initiated a traffic stop and a female passenger exited the suspect vehicle, which sped away.

Boese says a sheriff's supervisor cancelled the pursuit after 10 to 20 seconds due to the high speed.

Moments later the speeding car struck and killed a male pedestrian, then crashed into three parked cars which struck a passing truck. Several cars then burst into flames.

Deputies rescued the trapped suspect, who was flown to a hospital. He's identified only as 22 with addresses in Santa Monica and Venice.

Identities of the dead pedestrian and the female passenger have also not been released.

All lanes of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu are shut down following a violent and fiery crash involving four vehicles.

Television news footage showed at least one patient being airlifted from the scene near Kanan Dume Road Wednesday morning.

Firefighters doused a blaze that spread from the mangled cars to brush along the hillside about 30 miles west of Los Angeles.

Traffic is backed up in both directions as sheriff's officials investigate and crews clear the lanes.
