Off-duty border agent arrested with heroin, gun in truck

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Authorities say a U.S Border Patrol agent found asleep in a pickup truck with heroin and an illegal rifle has been arrested in southern California.

Officials say Brandon Herrera was arrested Sunday morning outside an apartment complex in Oceanside, north of San Diego.

Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey says when Herrera was taken into custody, he identified himself as a Border Patrol agent. It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.

City News Service reports Wednesday that Border Patrol officials confirmed the arrest but would not confirm the agent's name or details about his employment. Officials say the agent was placed on administrative leave.

Police responded after someone reported a suspicious person outside the apartment building.
