Giraffe born at San Diego Safari Park after another's death

SAN DIEGO - A giraffe has been born at San Diego Zoo Safari Park just a month after another had to be euthanized after being gored in the same habitat.

The male giraffe was born Sunday in an event streamed live on Facebook. After his legs and head jutted out from his mother for five minutes, the baby unfurled to the ground and the whole herd helped clean him.

As the other giraffes surrounded him, the newborn eventually stood up on wobbly legs and nuzzled his family.

The zoo said Tuesday that the 6-foot-tall baby is healthy and feeding from his mother, Acacia.

The birth comes a month after a 5-month-old giraffe was euthanized after he was found in the 65-acre enclosure with a gore wound from an antelope.
