PENTICTON - The construction industry in the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen continues to show strength in 2016 after steady increases last year.

Regional district staff report an increase of 14 building permits issued in March this year compared to the same month in 2015.

"We're seeing the best first three months of the year in permits issued than we've seen in the last six years," Development services manager Donna Butler says. "We're quite a bit higher than last year, which was considerably better than the year before. It's starting to be very busy in the building department."

In March, 35 permits worth about $8.7 million were issued compared to 21 permits worth about $5.4 million in March 2015.

A total of 92 building permits have been issued to date this year, compared to 54 last year.

The rise in construction is also putting more money into regional district coffers, with revenue so far this year at over $41,000 compared to about $32,000 at the same time last year.
