Black ice rollover on Silverstar Road leads to impaired charges

VERNON - A driver’s explanation that black ice was the cause of his rollover on Silver Star Road last night didn’t stand up to further RCMP investigation.

Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says in a media release a 24-year-old Vernon man has been banned for driving for 90 days after police showed up around 11:30 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 18, to the scene of the rollover near Forsberg Road.

Police allege the driver showed signs and symptoms of intoxication and produced an invalid drivers license before failing two roadside breath tests.

His vehicle was impounded for 30 days and police also wrote him a ticket for speeding.

Police say the man’s license was suspended for failing to attend a mandatory rehabilitation program.

"The road coming from the popular ski resort is usually well maintained, however black ice is often hard to see," Brett says in the release. "Après ski is often part of the ski culture, however if you are going to consume alcohol, please arrange for a safe and sober ride home."
