As a Bermuda designer, Rene Hill knows all about shorts — and she's giving a thumbs-up to the suit-shorts outfits worn by LeBron James and Draymond Green during the NBA Finals.

"I love the look, as it's a great run on the Bermuda short," Hill said via email to The Canadian Press after reviewing photos and video of the NBA stars.

"The look has taken a tried and true Bermudian tradition — spring, summer and fall staple — to a trendy and excitable new level. Loads of fun!" she added.

Shorts and a jacket have long been in vogue for Bermudian men, allowing them to look sharp and stay cool in the heat. According to lore, it was the heat of tropical and sub-tropical parts of the former British Empire that prompted the British military to come up with the iconic shorts now associated with the picturesque island 1,800 kilometres southeast of Toronto.

Hill says Bermuda shorts are more than just shorts — they are tapered, the hems are couture and the length is mainly set at two inches above the knee.

"Bermudian men wear mainly pastel-coloured and darker-hued shorts paired with a navy blazer, a long-sleeved shirt, sometimes a tie and knee-length socks," Hill said.

She says the shorts are usually purchased separately from the blazer, shirt and socks.

Bermuda shorts are also popular at island weddings, often in pink or light blue.

Hill is a former reporter for both The Royal Gazette newspaper and Bermuda Broadcasting Company. She left journalism in 2011 to focus on fashion, establishing Rene Hill Originals.

Her designs have been featured at shows in both Bermuda and New York.

The Golden State Warriors lead the best-of-seven NBA Finals 3-0 with Game 4 scheduled for Friday in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.
