B.C. man sentenced for strapping stepson nearly every day for years

PRINCE GEORGE - A B.C. man who is already serving a lengthy prison term for sexual assault has been sentenced for what a judge describes as a "very misguided" attempt to discipline his stepson.

D.W., whose full name cannot be published, pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon for strapping his stepson with a ruler and a wooden spoon nearly every day for six years.

A written ruling says D.W. used a ruler or wooden spoon to hit Z.W. starting when the boy was eight years old at D.W.'s home near Prince George, B.C.

D.W. hit Z.W. over the boy's clothing until he was 12, at which point D.W. began to hit the child on his bare bottom, hitting him between 20 and 90 times per session.

Judge Kathleen Ker has sentenced D.W. to a year, though the sentence will run concurrently with his sexual assault sentence, which is already underway.

D.W. was sentenced earlier this year to 16 years for sexually assaulting two stepdaughters, who are Z.W.'s older siblings.
