Preliminary hearing set for parents accused of malnutrition in toddler death

CALGARY - A preliminary hearing date has been set for a Calgary couple who police say contributed to their toddler son's death by failing to provide proper nutrition.

Jennifer Clark, who is 38, and Jeromie Clark, who is 34, were charged in December with criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life.

Their 14-month-old son, John, died the day after he was brought to a Calgary hospital in November 2013.

Police have said the child had a staph infection that was untreatable due to complications from malnutrition.

They said the family has strict dietary restrictions based on their faith and nutritional beliefs.

The three-day hearing, which will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial, is scheduled for Nov. 2.
