Attack at Rutland Sikh temple not believed to be race related

KELOWNA - A 29-year-old man was arrested Monday after attacking two men and a woman at the Okanagan Sikh Temple in Kelowna.

The man started acting aggressively toward people just before 9 a.m. today, June 10, while outside the temple in the 1100 block of Rutland Road North.

He grabbed a woman’s arm, was confronted by a man over the assault then went into the temple and attacked another man. The men who had been attacked then wrestled their assailant to the ground before police arrived to arrest him.

"Both men should be recognized for their bravery and determination in subduing the suspect, despite being injured during the physical altercation,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP said in a news release. “These men more than likely prevented further similar attacks against other innocent bystanders.”

The suspect, who is from Kelowna, was taken into custody and faces a number of potential criminal charges.

Police say they do not believe the attack was religiously motivated.

“Although we don’t believe the unidentified woman sustained any injuries, our investigators would like to hear from her about her encounter, as we continue to investigate,”  O’Donaghey said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
