Pakistan says 'unprovoked' Indian attack kills 3 in Kashmir

March 01, 2018 - 7:38 AM

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan said an "unprovoked" Indian attack killed two soldiers and a 70-year-old villager in the disputed Kashmir region on Thursday.

Pakistan's army said it returned fire after coming under attack, causing "substantial" damage to Indian military posts. It was unclear whether Indian troops suffered any casualties.

On Thursday, Pakistan summoned an Indian diplomat and lodged a protest over what it said was a violation of a 2003 cease-fire.

The two sides frequently trade fire across the Line of Control, which marks the boundary between parts of the region held by Pakistan and India.

The two nuclear-armed rivals each claim Kashmir in its entirety, and have gone to war over the region twice since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.
