A Chinese restaurant in Kamloops closed its doors earlier this week and the owner is selling off kitchen equipment and furniture.

Beijing Restaurant, located at 1250 Trans-Canada Highway West, has been serving the Kamloops community savoury Chinese dishes for over five years.

“The owner wants to retire,” restaurant manager Andy Chau said. “Things are a bit difficult and it's just time to close it, it’s time to take a break.”

The city has seen the closure of several ethnic restaurants this year due to a variety of reasons.

In June, the Watercress Vietnamese Restaurant closed citing staffing shortages, the German restaurant Passek’s Classics closed due to staff shortages and the impacts of COVID restrictions, and the Chinese restaurant Dynasty Garden, whose closure was mostly related to crime in the area. Pakistani Spezia House closed in October citing family reasons.

Chau didn't expand on the reasons for the closure, only that the owner is retiring.

Long-time customer Ashlie Vera said she's sad to see the restaurant go.

“I loved Beijing,” she said. “It was one of my favourites in town. The chow mein was so good. I liked their special fried rice, it has shrimp in it, and I liked their spring rolls. The view as nice and the food was delicious.”

Customer Kristin Marin said she loved the food because it came in big portions with lots of options.

"Their lettuce wraps on their appie menu were my favourite, a ground beef mix with chopped veggies that you wrapped in lettuce yourself with a side of hoisin sauce. The staff was always wonderful and the food never disappointed."

There are tables, chairs and baby chairs for sale, along with a deep fryer, buffet bar, wok stove, plates and other equipment.

The sale started Wednesday and buyers will have to pick up their purchases as there is no delivery.

Chau is not sure what is going to be moving into the building.

Those interested in the sale can go here for more information.
