KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops man is facing charges after allegedly stealing a truck from a dealership, before being arrested minutes later.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that police were alerted to the theft of a 2010 Dodge Ram from Butler Auto Sales on Tranquille Road at approximately 10:45 a.m. today, Jan. 22.

Shortly after receiving the report, an officer saw the stolen pick-up near Northills Mall, Shelkie says.

The officer saw the suspect and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver of the pick-up allegedly fled the area. Shortly after, police received a call from a member of the public regarding a vehicle matching the description that was being driven erratically on Fortune Drive and turning toward Schubert Drive.

Shelkie says police flooded the area and located the stolen vehicle abandoned on the corner of Cornwall Street and Kent Avenue.

A few minutes later, officers located the suspect. Police dogs were able to track the suspect from the abandoned vehicle. He was arrested without incident.

The 22-year-old Kamloops man is being held in custody to go before a judge. Shelkie says he was previously known to police.
