Alaska capital city to allow annual community fireworks show

JUNEAU, Alaska - Juneau's city-supported July 4 fireworks show will be held, though spectators will have to wear face coverings and maintain distance from non-household members in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the city said.

It is not clear how strictly that requirement will be enforced. Lisa Phu, city public information officer, said by email Wednesday that the language for the proposed ordinance mandating use of a face covering during the show was still being worked out.

The Juneau Assembly gave the OK to the show, scheduled to begin at 11:59 p.m. on July 3. The fireworks traditionally are shot off from Gastineau Channel, with people lining up as they would for a parade to take in the festivities.

The city also allows residents to shoot off their own fireworks but asks they do so in a “considerate” manner.
