A preview of summer weather this week in the Okanagan

Sunny skies and summer-like temperatures are in this week's Okanagan forecast.

PENTICTON - Get ready for a taste of summer this week in the Okanagan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says a high pressure system is spreading into the B.C. Interior from the coast this week, bringing with it sunny skies and well above normal temperatures.

Lundquist says the Okanagan will start the week with daytime high temperatures in the low 20s, and by Thursday the mercury could climb close to the 30 degree mark. He reminds those enjoying the summer-like conditions to be wary of the increased danger of wildfire and mindful of frigid water conditions in the area’s lakes and rivers this time of year.

The sunny skies today, May 6, will become increasingly cloudy this afternoon with 20 km/h northwest winds and a 40 per cent chance of showers this evening and after midnight in Kelowna and Vernon, with a 30 per cent chance of showers in Penticton.

It should reach 22 C in Vernon and Kelowna today, with a low of 7 C, while in Penticton a daytime high of 23 C is forecast with a low of 8 C.

The sunny weather should return tomorrow with a high of 22 C expected and northwest winds at 20 km/h in the afternoon. Penticton should see a high of 23 C tomorrow.

Wednesday and Thursday should be sunny and warm with a high of 24 C both days, and overnight lows of 9 C and 10 C respectively.

Friday it may feel like it's time to go to the beach, with an anticipated high of 28 C for Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton, before things start to cool off a bit on the weekend.

The sunshine is expected to continue through Sunday, with weekend highs of 27 C Saturday and 26 C Sunday.

The Okanagan normally experiences a high of 18 C and a low of 5 C this time of year.
