82-year-old woman struck by car in Kelowna

August 17, 2018 - 3:56 PM

KELOWNA - An 82-year-old woman remains in hospital after being struck by a vehicle on a busy Kelowna road.

Police say an officer was flagged down by a concerned individual on the 1900 block of Underhill Street who mentioned a person had been struck by a vehicle not far from that area, according to a media release.

Kelowna RCMP says an elderly woman was walking across Baron Road when she was struck by a red Buick Enclave. The driver was trying to make a left hand turn onto Baron Road during heavy traffic.

Witnesses at the scene say the woman landed on the hood of the SUV before falling under the vehicles tires. Although the woman sustained serious injuries police say she is in stable condition and currently remains in the hospital.

"RCMP would like to acknowledge the number of bystanders who jumped in to provide first aid to the injured woman and keep her calm and as comfortable as possible while emergency medical crews responded to the scene," Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says in the media release.

Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police say.

The 48-year-old driver from Alberta remained at the scene and fully cooperated with police. He has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian, police say.

Anyone who witnessed with the incident and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
