6 Thompson Okanagan healthcare facilities, including Kelowna hospital, have COVID-19 outbreaks

There are currently six healthcare facilities, including Kelowna General Hospital, that are dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks.

An outbreak was first reported at the hospital in the rehab ward, Sept. 23. Interior Health does not list how many patients and staff have been affected and an email sent to the health authority was not responded to by the time of this article’s publication.

In Vernon, Polson Extended Care, reported Sept. 27, and Gateby Care Facility, reported Sept. 21, have outbreaks affecting the entire long-term care homes. Armstrong has an outbreak at Pleasant Valley Manor, first reported Sept. 14, affecting the whole care home.

In the South Okanagan, Mariposa Gardens, a long-term care home, reported an outbreak Sept. 22, affecting the whole facility.

Williams Lake long-term care home Deni House also reported an outbreak Sept. 27, which is affecting the entire care home.

Between Sept. 18 and Sept. 24, a total of 143 COVID-19 cases were reported in the Interior Health Authority and 26 people were hospitalized due to the disease. This is a slight increase from the previous week where 125 cases were reported and 24 people were hospitalized, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control data.

Currently, case counts are also an underestimate of the true number of cases due to a change in testing because of the highly transmissible COVID-19 Omicron variant.
