B.C. health officials are reporting 427 new cases of COVID-19 today, including 47 within the Interior Health region, for a total of 74,710 since the start of the pandemic.

Of these cases, 4,150 are active and 232 individuals are currently hospitalized. Sixty-three of those who are hospitalized are in intensive care. There have been three new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,317 deaths in the last year.

During yesterday's press briefing, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said that the caseload remains too high, particularly in larger urban centres, and that's concerning while the vaccination program continues to move slowly.  To date, 176,015 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 26,030 of which are second doses. Yesterday, B.C. had 171,755 doses of a vaccine administered, with 22,914 of those being to people who received a second dose.

"Most people in B.C. are doing the right thing, and we encourage everyone, in turn, to support friends and family to also continue to take precautions in their daily lives. It is not only our individual efforts that make the difference, but the power of all of us working together that helps break the chains of transmission," Dr. Henry and health minister Adrian Dix said today, Feb. 17, in a joint statement.

They also said that researchers continue to monitor and track B.C.'s progress, to learn from the unique situation that the pandemic has created here in B.C. and around the world.

A survey has been launched by the researchers at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, BC Children's Hospital and the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to understand the impacts on the mental well-being of youth. To participate follow this link.

Since yesterday, B.C had 90 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 236 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 18 in the Island Health region, 47 in the Interior Health region, 31 in the Northern Health region and five new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There have been no new healthcare facility outbreaks. The outbreaks at Sunnybank Retirement Home and Mountain View Manor are now over.
