200 litres of human waste spilled onto Harvey Avenue

A city bus and a truck hauling portable toilets collided leaving a smelly mess on Harvey Avenue Monday afternoon, June 6, 2016

KELOWNA - Firefighters and city workers were hosing down Harvey Avenue today after a minor crash between a transit bus and port-o-potty truck spilled human waste.

The collision happened just after 2:30 p.m., June 6, when a bus headed to UBC Okanagan and a work truck merged into each other.

Const. Paul Mlait says the accident was minor but tore open one of the storage tanks that holds waste from the toilets and spilled roughly 200 litres onto the HOV lane in front of the old Kelowna Secondary School site.

Firefighters hosed the treated waste into a drain before pumping it out with a vacuum truck.

Mlait says there were passengers on the bus when the crash occurred but no one was injured.
