Wine in a can? Oh ya, baby. Glassless and handy as heck, Castoro de Oro Winery in Oliver has just launched the first 100% B.C. wine in a can and they are a hit.

Owners Bruno Kelle and Stella Schmidt decided to jump in and follow a trend that has already become popular in the U.S. over the past couple of years. After researching the idea and receiving super positive feedback, they were all in.

Bruno Kelle & Stella Schmidt of Castoro de Oro Winery in Oliver are thrilled to announce the launch of their new wine in a can.'

“We were nervously anxious and super enthusiastically looking forward to seeing all the places and activities they would enhance. We’ve already seen a few activities we didn’t think of, including horseback riding, kayaking and rock hounding,” Schmidt says.

Canada has seen some wines in cans including a sparkling wine here in the Okanagan but Castoro is the first to offer premium still wine in a can, made from 100% B.C. estate-grown grapes. They are offering three of their customer favourite wines in beautifully designed 250 ml cans: a red (Merlot), white blend (Pinot Blanc, Vidal, Siegfried and Viognier) and a rosé (Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc). All three are also available in bottle.

Kelle and Schmidt are no strangers to the wine industry, they opened their winery way back in 2006 on the storied Golden Mile in Oliver. With a perfectly situated hillside winery that rises above the wine shop, the couple has been hands on from vine to bottle since they began this adventure. And as they like to say, “we are farmers who like to make good wine,” and now they can also say, good wine in a can.

And timing couldn’t be better for wine in a can as we are all being encouraged to spend time outside. Picnics, camping, boating and as Stella includes, dog walking, are all perfect activities to pack along a couple of these delightful little cans. Easy to carry, they are light and non-breakable, and they are portioned so if you only feel like a glass of wine, no need to open a bottle.

Castoro de Oro
Castoro de Oro's Winery has updated the tasting room to be super safe for visits.

Three types of wines in a can available at Castoro de Oro:

Merlot: “A serious, well-made Merlot that one would never know came from a can if you served it to them blind. Rich colour, delicious plum, blueberry, raspberry, black cherry, dark chocolate, and elegant oak spices, tannic structure and depth all leading to a long finish.”

Pinot Duetto Rosé: “A vibrant cherry colour with a vivid palate of cherries, strawberries, fresh raspberries, wild Okanagan herbs, with rhubarb and cranberry notes and plenty of juicy acidity on the long finish.”

Heart of Gold®: “This blend of Pinot Blanc, Vidal, Siegfried and Viognier has aromas of peach, grapefruit, apricots and slight cotton candy (from the rare Siegfried grape) while exhibiting a flavour explosion on the palate of fresh fruit salad including peach, red apple, apricot, honeydew melon, honey and more, round and fruity on the palate, with just enough citrus on the finish to keep it fresh.”
