As the snow melts more and litter becomes visible, Peter Davoust of Kelowna is inviting the public to join him on a spring clean-up this Saturday.

The area he has in mind is along Academy Way.

“It's ugly and disheartening, and it makes me feel like our neighbourhood lacks a sense of community,” Davoust said. “I want to make the neighbourhood look nicer and help people feel like they belong to a community, rather than just living in anonymously in a bunch of apartment buildings.”

Davoust said the build-up of litter isn’t the worst out there and that it’s easy to miss from the street.

“But walking down the sidewalk – especially if you walk every day – it's hard to ignore.”

Among the pieces of trash that have been there since last year is a tire.

This will be the first community clean-up ever organized by Davoust.

He’ll be bringing garbage bags and nitrile gloves for the crew, and for those inclined to help move larger items, he suggests bringing a heavier pair of wok gloves.

The clean-up begins at the Academy Ridge townhouses on Saturday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m. The team will work their way up the hill until they reach the Kelowna Brewing Company, where they can debrief over beverages.

“My hope is that afterward, at the very least, the volunteers who join us will recognize a few more friendly faces in the neighbourhood. And if it goes well, it would be nice to do a clean-up like this regularly," Davoust said.

If the event has to be cancelled due to poor weather then a post will be shared to the Academy Way Volunteer Clean-Up Facebook page here.
