Okanagan, Kamloops breweries walk away with gold, bronze medals at B.C. Beer Awards

It was a night of celebration for breweries across the Thompson Okanagan, who walked away with gold and bronze medals in a provincial competition.

Penticton’s craft beer scene especially struck gold at the B.C. Beer Awards and Festival, returning for its 11th year Nov. 5 at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

Cannery Brewing won gold for its Thornless Blackberry Porter in the Fruit Beer category, Abandoned Rail Brew Co. won with its Marzen in the Amber Lager category, Tin Whistle Brewing Company won the Spice Beer category with its One Piece Wonder and Slackwater Brewing won for best packaging design and best handle design.

Awards were presented for more than 30 beer categories plus top awards including Best in Show, the CBC Judge's Choice, Rookie of the Year, Brewery of the Year, Innovator of the Year and The Legend Award. Returning again is the Creative Industry Awards, recognizing breweries for crafting unique items and experiences that enhance the craft beer lovers' brand awareness, according to a news release issued by the festival. 

Iron Road Brewing Co., in Kamloops, walked away with gold for its Roundhouse Oud Bruin in the European Sour category and bronze for their Locomotive Lager in the International lager category.

Freddy's Brewpub, of Kelowna,  also received an honourable mention in the Amber Lager category with its Harkrider.

Shuswap Lake Brewing also placed third with its Firkin Irish Stout for U.K. and Irish Stouts.
