The View Winery in Kelowna is finally as spooky as a 100-year-old building ought to be.

The structure was originally built as an apple packing house in 1922, and today, it’s a place where things go bump in the night.

“There are some pretty creepy sounds at night – it’s probably just building shifting. But some of our staff believe it is haunted,” said winery president Jennifer Turton-Molgat, who’s great-grand father built the packing house.

The View has been stepping up its halloween game for years.

“This year it’s a crescendo,” Turton-Molgat said.

She’s grateful for neighbours like Kathy and Dave Bullach who helped her take decorations to a new level for 2022.

Despite how much scarier the winery has become leading up to Halloween, Turton-Molgat said it remains friendly for children and dogs.

And it’s an extra-fun time of year for pairings – the wine is paired with candy.

“Our pinotage gets paired with Reeses peanut butter cups. It’s a robust red that tends to express a ton of berry fruit flavour with a little bit of a nutty smoky note," she said. "The beautiful creaminess of the peanut butter cup pairs really well with the acidity and nuttiness in the pinotage. The two of them together are a match made in heaven.”

The View’s rieslings pair well with sour candies, and the rosé goes well with Swedish berries, she said.

“It makes pairing seem less pretentious.”

The winery will be hosting Nevermore – a scary Friday night fundraiser. It’s happening Oct. 28 and proceeds will support Project Literacy. Tickets cost $35 through Eventbrite.
