iN WINE Wednesday: Scorched Earth Winery PASK Pinot Noir

PASK Pinot Noir
PASK Pinot Noir

This gorgeous Pinot Noir comes from Kelowna's Scorched Earth Winery. PASK is an acronym representing the names of their family: Peter, Anita, Shae, Kiana. Future labels will all be Scorched Earth Winery.

Tasting Notes: Flavours of dark cherry, plum, with earthy notes and a hint of vanilla.
Pair with a great BBQ salmon and spicy food.

Way down yonder on Lakeshore Road, almost at the very end where the reminder of Kelowna’s horrific fire remains you will find a glorious rebirth. Adjacent to that land, you will see a beautiful lush vineyard crawling up the steep hillside, this is the aptly named Scorched Earth Winery.

Owners Anita and Peter purchased this land in 2004 on a ‘fire sale’, like the real kind in this case. There was an old vineyard on site already, one that was producing since the 1970s. The land has loads of history, the original owners were the Young family who owned it for several generations.

“In 2006 we decided to replant and convert to organic as the soil had become depleted of all the nutrients and with all the fire retardant the land was struggling," Anita explains. "We consulted a family friend down in Napa and he came up with a planting strategy similar to how it's planted in other parts of the world such as California and Europe. Based on soil testing and growing degree days it was then decided to plant only Pinot Noir with several varieties of root stock that were grafted and shipped from France. We never anticipated that based on our planting design that finding equipment to fulfill our sites needs would be so difficult in Canada. So we do most of the work manually.”

And once you see the grade of this vineyard, you will realize that this Pinot is a serious labour of love.

They presently have five acres planted with intentions to expand another three acres and are producing four wines: 2018 Bearly Blushing Pinot Noir Rose, 2014 & 2015 PASK Pinot Noir and 2014 Scorched Earth Merlot, 2016 Guilty Pleasure Syrah. As for this gorgeous hilltop deck they are building overlooking the vineyard, Anita says: “The deck should be completed soon as we are hosting our first event for the August long weekend.”

This unique and stunning venue will be available for private bookings and Anita plans to host yoga classes here as well. Currently wine tastings are by appointment only, phone to book: 250-717-7994. You can visit the website here.

Scorched Earth Winery will be pouring at the Garagiste North Small Producers Festival August 18 and at the B.C. Pinot Noir Celebration August 17th. These are both NOT TO MISS wine events and together make it the most exciting wine weekend in B.C.
