A new restaurant offering fresh Canadian fare opened a month ago in Kamloops' busy downtown core, and the owners are getting positive feedback.

Le Burger Café on Victoria Street keeps a simple menu of burgers, shakes, fries and wings.

“We make favourite Canadian comfort foods that are a better quality than what fast food franchises offer,” said co-owner and cook Piyush Chhabra.

Chhabra brings years of cooking and hospitality experience to the team, while his brother Gaurav Ahuja has worked in the restaurant industry for years.

The brothers said the secrets to success are a simple menu, sourcing ingredients and supplies locally, and maintaining a healthy work environment.

“I know from experience when a menu is complicated it can mean a lot of ingredients are frozen, and we want to offer the freshest food possible,” Ahuja said. “Having a simple, delicious menu will make it easier in the future if we want to expand into other cities.”

The brothers source their ingredients and supplies locally as much as possible from smaller, mom and pop stores to help support the local economy, which also reduces the risks of supply chain delays.

They employ a small work crew of five people.

“We are retaining staff by keeping a small team that works well together, providing benefits and keeping a healthy work environment,” Ahuja said. “It was a struggle to get employees at first.”

There are several burger options, like the Notorious Burger that comes with two patties and liquid cheese, and the Bollywood Burger that comes with paneer cheese. Or, customers have the option of building their own burgers with lots of topping options.

There are fries, chicken wings, poutine, onion rings and four different flavours of milkshakes available.

Ahuja said his long term goal is to expand the restaurant into other locations and add breakfast and specialty coffee items to the menu.
