The Ye Olde Welcome Inn in Oliver added a two-pound beef burger to its menu, and until somebody manages to eat it all in one sitting, it will remain nameless.

Including the bun, cheese, bacon and veggie toppings – the whole burger weighs closer to four pounds, according to Angelina Stamper, a bartender at the restaurant who coordinated the burger-eating challenge.

“Just thought it would be a cool way to bring people to try the challenge,” she said. “We want to add some excitement back into the world.”

So far only two people have attempted the challenge in the three weeks since it began. Both seemed like formidable opponents to Stamper, but she said neither were able to eat more than half of the burger.

“They were big guys,” Stamper said. “I was quite surprised – one fellow I know personally and he can usually eat lots of Big Macs.”

Anybody who finishes the burger within one hour will get the $40 meal for free as well as their mugshot up on the wall. Not only will the first person who eats it all within an hour will receive those perks – but he or she will be the one who names it.

The two-pound burger can be dressed like any other burger on the menu, she said, as long as it weighs the same amount.

“We're pretty famous for our burgers."

The challenge comes with a side of fries but they do not have to be eaten to win. In order to complete the challenge, the burger has to be consumed entirely including every topping.

“You have to eat everything,” said Stamper.

Two or more people can order the burger to split as a meal, but they will not be eligible to win the contest.

Since the two-pound burger is such a heavy order, Ye Olde Welcome Inn requires 24 hours notice from anyone wishing to attempt the challenge.

Stamper said the next challengers have already given their notice, as two men will be taking on the two-pound burger on Friday night.

“It’s two friends – one small guy and one big guy.”
