Penticton now has a fabulous addition to its downtown food scene, one that is already racking up rave reviews. False Bay Savoury Pies sells savoury pies, as the name quickly gives away, but you might be surprised at the incredible variety they offer. Locals are raving about the delicious meat pies, and the selection goes far beyond traditional meat pies.

Savoury Pies vs. Fruit Pies

Here in the Okanagan Valley, fruit pies tend to generate all the attention. The world of pies goes way beyond fruit, though. Beef, brisket, chicken, and seafood pies are a huge part of pie cuisine in countries like the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. False Bay Savoury Pies offers some of the best varieties you will ever try. Starting with the finest, buttery pie-crust pastry that is second to none, False Bay Savoury Pies is creating every type of pie you can imagine.

The proud owners of False Bay Savoury Pies, Kevin and Anita Best, are new to Penticton - but they are not new to creating mouth-watering pies. They recently moved to Penticton from BC’s Sunshine Coast, where they catered to a thriving wholesale business. While the success was wonderful, something was missing: a certain level of freedom and creativity.

Creativity is the Main Driver

Kevin and Anita's passion for creativity is the main reason they found their way to Penticton. While a renowned favourite on the Sunshine Coast, the more remote location and the lower population density meant relying heavily on the wholesale avenue. While that side of the business was very successful, it lacked some of the freedom and creativity that Anita and Kevin loved.

According to Kevin, when you sell wholesale and get really good at it, you eventually need to implement commercial equipment. That would not only mean sacrificing the hand-making of each pie but also losing the person-to-person customer experience that means so much to them.  "While the steady revenue and 5-star reviews generated from the wholesale business was nice, we both felt that it held back our creativity," Kevin says. They wanted to focus on their handmade, quality pies.

How do you know when you are getting a quality, handmade pie? That's easy - no two pies look precisely the same. "Commercial equipment just cannot replicate the quality we get in making the pies by hand," Kevin tells us. And when creativity and quality are the things that matter most, it shows. You can find buttery and flaky lattice-domed pies, puff-pastry crusts, and everything in between at False Bay Savoury Pies.

With the new location in downtown Penticton, Kevin and Anita can let their creativity loose - and they are having a blast doing just that. Sure, they still have those essential staples like chicken pot pie, beef pot pie, and steak and kidney pie - but there are some fantastic new additions, too. "We are creating new pies every week," Kevin explains, "And our customers love the diverse selection." Kevin rattles off some of the pies in the store, and the variety is impressive. Mac and Cheese Brisket, for example, or the very exotic sounding Butter Chicken Pie. Customers are encouraged to check their website for the many choices, or call ahead.

Kevin and Anita's creative and eclectic selection of pies continues to grow. There are savoury seafood pies, like Shrimp Mac and Cheese pie and a delicious Salmon Wellington, and their Vegetarian pie is very popular. The sky's the limit, it seems!

Award-Winning Sausages Too!

Heralding from South Africa, Kevin is an expert at making Boerewors, the world-famous sausages heralding from Cape Town. A mix of Afrikaans and Dutch words ('Boer' meaning farmer and 'wors' meaning sausage), Kevin's award-winning sausages make the perfect addition to your summer patio dining. They sell out fast, so placing your order in advance over the phone is a great idea.

False Bay Savory Pies' location is perfect for its grab-on-the-go business style. It is conveniently located on the south side of downtown Penticton on White Ave. West in an area with ample parking, making it ideal for customers to swing in and pick up dinner on the run.

Customers can grab a ready-to-bake pie, stock their freezer with fabulous options for entertaining guests, or pick out a freshly baked pie for a picnic outing. Calling ahead to place your order if you have something specific you need Kevin says is a good idea, as their products sell out fast. If you are still wondering about False Bay fruit pies, you can find those too. Fruit pies are seasonal, though, and as the company name implies, the focus is on savoury over fruit.

When creativity is the primary driver, there is no telling what will be available! "In the Okanagan, many locals tend to only associate fruit with pies," Kevin acknowledges. But, he tells me, once they sample False Bay Savoury Pies, they are quickly won over.

Kevin and Anita have been open in Penticton since February. They are already drawing customers from as far as Vernon, Kelowna and Osoyoos. They are even supplying many of their old customers on the Sunshine Coast, who lost their favourite pie company to the lovely city of Penticton.

The shop is located at 98 White Avenue West, Penticton. Check out their great website or call Kevin and Anita at the shop at 604-230-8109. Try a pie today!
