The new manager of a cozy South Okanagan winery has ambitious plans to evolve and develop its brand.

Pipe' Dreams Winery was purchased last year by long-time Okanagan Valley farmers Karmjeet and Sam Khangura and it’s now managed by their son Harsh Khangura, who is currently learning all the ins and outs of the winery business at only 22 years of age.

The South Okanagan may be known for its bold, heavier reds but Pipe’ Dreams grows a unique blend of grapes, attracting those who favour lighter red wines.

Three German varietals — Zweigelt, Grüner Veltliner and Kerner — are all grown at the winery’s location at 168 Sportsmens Bowl Road in Oliver.

“We’re starting off small but I’ll build this brand,” Harsh said, adding he wants to begin growing more common grapes to the South Okanagan like Pinot Gris as well.

The Zweigelt is a nice light, red wine that’s perfect for summer. The Grüner Veltliner is a refreshing, dry wine that’s another great addition to summer meals, he said.

People are used to having bold red wines so these wines are a perfect start for those looking to start their wine-tasting journey.

Since the Khanguras have taken over the business, they’ve also renovated three cozy suites that are nestled above the winery and are currently renting them out through Airbnb.

Two of the suites are more hotel-style suites and a larger suite, perfect for longer stays, features a full kitchen and living room.

“It’s been going really well, there’s been a lot of bookings and we’re completely packed until the end of September,” Harsh said.

Originally from India, Karmjeet and Sam have been farming in the Okanagan for more than 20 years, including vineyards. They also own a fruit stand, called Rama Farm Market. Harsh has also been helping his parents run a stand in Kaleden since he was 13, which he said helped him develop a good work ethic.

“I also have a little brother that’s been helping me out here so it’s been going pretty good,” he said.

The Airbnb rentals can be found online. You can also learn more about the winery by visiting its website or by calling  250-485-4192.
