A Vernon resident is taking her DJ, disco ball and rentable roller skates to arenas throughout the Interior, throwing disco parties.

Anna Hyett of The Super Roller Disco hosted her first event in Salmon Arm last month where the turnout was so great, it prompted her to keep scheduling more events in more towns.

“If 50 people attend, our costs are covered,” she said. “We had almost 200 people at the first party and the feedback was incredible. Couples, families, teenagers came out and everyone was having fun.”

Hyett grew up roller skating but fell out the hobby as a teenager. She recently put her skates back on.

“I turned 40 and couldn’t afford a sports car so I bought myself a pair of roller skates instead,” she said. “Roller skating is so joyful, the music is good for you, and you’re moving your body.”

Roller skating has been seeing an upward trend as the once popular activity appears to be coming back in Kamloops, the Okanagan and the Shuswap. Kelowna’s roller skating scene saw a growth spurt amid COVID-19 and Penticton wasn’t far behind.

The next Super Roller Disco event is at Salmon Arm on Saturday, May 13, at the Shaw Centre from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

A roller skating event is scheduled in Revelstoke on May 20, Merritt on May 27 and West Kelowna in June. Hyett intends to bring the fun to more towns and cities in the future.

“I can go anywhere as long as there’s an arena,” she said. “Not sure what I’ll do in the winter, they put ice on all the roller skating rinks.”

Skaters can expect a fog machine and “really loud music” played by a DJ called Miss Demeanor. The events are alcohol free and available for all ages, cash or debit is accepted, and rollerblades are welcome.
