Uber can now legally be used to hail a ride in Kelowna – however drivers aren't part of the deal.

Uber Rents is a new feature on the app that connects customers with local car rental companies. Uber’s application to offer ridesharing in B.C. has still not been approved by the Passenger Transportation Board, so the app still can't be used in Kelowna for its primary function, but gives customers a new way to rent a car.

“We feel it’s going to make things a lot easier,” said Laura Miller, head of communications and public policy at Uber Canada. “This promotes our main objective which is to try and provide an alternative to car ownership.”

For travellers, Uber Rents can be used in any city – even outside of Canada – where the app operates.

In Australia, Uber users can rent cars from private owners rather than from rental companies. Miller said Uber is always exploring new options in all its markets, and that it’s possible the same service will be offered in Canada eventually.

“We can become the one stop shop for people to book their transportation needs.”

As for Uber’s application to offer ridesharing in B.C., Miller is optimistic that its approval will coincide with the warmer weather.

“Tourism season is getting underway and we know there is a need for safe, reliable, affordable options,” she said.
