A police pursuit in Kamloops resulted in a rescued victim and a suspect in custody who is facing multiple charges including forcible confinement.

On Nov. 30, at approximately 5 p.m., Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP Detachment received multiple 911 calls in which a woman was heard whispering for help, according to a release. From these calls, investigators found a woman was being forcibly confined in a vehicle.

“This situation was presented as extremely high-risk for the woman inside the vehicle,” Supt Jeff Pelley, Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s Officer in Charge, said in the release. “When the truck was located and failed to stop for officers, a police pursuit was authorized due to the concern for the woman’s life and safety. The response ended successfully with the victim being rescued, the suspect taken into custody, and no injuries received to any of the parties or police officers involved.”

Multiple officers from the Kamloops rural and city detachments and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team were involved in locating and stopping the vehicle as it fled through Kamloops, towards Chase and back to the city.

Spike belts as well as other tactics were used to mobilize the truck which finally came to a stop near Grand Boulevard and Highway 1. The chase resulted in the damage of two police vehicles, light controls at an intersection and a civilian vehicle.

The male suspect is currently being held until his bail hearing and police are recommending charges related to forcible confinement, breach of release order, flight from police; dangerous, and prohibitive driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, and failure to remain.

“This was a great coordinated effort and an exceptional resolution to a high-risk incident that spanned across our city and rural coverage areas, and was supported by local and district RCMP resources,” Pelley said in the release.

Kamloops RCMP frontline officers, the Serious Crimes Unit, General Investigation Support Team, the Forensic Identification Services, and the Crime Reduction Unit are collaboratively working on the investigation.
