Heads up, travellers, some snow is coming down on the mountain pass highways in the Thompson and Okanagan regions but it should be clear by Sunday.

Environment Canada is predicting up to 10 centimetres of snow on the Coquihalla Highway and Trans-Canada Highway from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass, and 5 cm of snow on the Okanagan Connector today, Jan. 10.

“Today will be the snowmaking day with anywhere between five to ten centimetres for most of the travellers’ routes in the south and then by the time we get into Saturday afternoon everything should be tapering off,” Environment Canada meteorologist Derek Lee said.

Kamloops and the Okanagan are expecting temperatures slightly above freezing and possibly a mix of rain and snow today and Saturday.

The forecast might seem dull and dreary now, but clean off your sunglasses because Environment Canada is forecasting a sunny week next week.

“We're on a ridge of high pressure,” Lee said. “That usually just brings us sunny and good weather.”

For drivers hitting the highways this weekend, Lee said the conditions aren’t at the point of putting out a weather alert but he said people should be cautious on the mountain passes, as always.

“Keep your eyes out, but today will be probably the heaviest if anything,” Lee said.
