Four killed in two Yellowhead collisions near Kamloops
Four people died in a pair of collisions north of Kamloops Thursday morning, both on Highway 5.
The first was in the Rayleigh neighbourhood, where Kamloops RCMP were called to a vehicle in the ditch around 6 a.m. Officers found one person dead when they got to the scene this morning, Dec. 28.
The deceased driver was the only person inside the vehicle at the time, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a news release.
A second crash was roughly an hour later and further north on the same highway. Barriere RCMP and BC Highway Patrol were called to the two-vehicle crash, where three people were killed.
Officers were called around 6:50 a.m. to the scene near Oliver Creek Forest Service Road, where a southbound Toyota Corolla attempted to pass a semi truck and trailer, according to a BC RCMP news release.
Police said the Corolla collided head-on with an oncoming Ford Sprinter van. The Corolla's driver and two passengers died in the crash, while the driver of the van was taken to hospital with injuries that aren't believed to be life-threatening.
The highway was closed in both directions due to the Barriere crash and the southbound lane was closed in Rayleigh while the scenes were each investigated. It's since been reopened.
