Westcorp wants highrise on Kelowna's former Hiawatha mobile home park to go higher

Construction of 200 townhouses is already underway on the former Hiawatha mobile home park and campground on Lakeshore Road in Kelowna.

Now the developer, Westcorp, wants to change the zoning plan so it can build up to 17 storeys high, as opposed to the 11 storeys now allowed.

“The height has been set-back further away from Lakeshore Road than originally proposed to better relate to Lakeshore Road and the lake,” states a report going to city council on Monday, May 2.

Westcorp bought the 18 acres of land in 2007 and has gone through a number of versions of what it will ultimately look like.

The latest proposal is that it not include a hotel, as originally visioned, but to keep it all as rental units, up to 1,110 of them.

Westcorp is also asking for a 10% reduction in parking spots, which the city generally allows for projects that are guaranteed to stay rental for at least 10 years.

Before going ahead, the application will be subject to a public hearing.
