More than 60 neglected dogs were seized from a home in the Mission by B.C. SPCA officers yesterday from a person claiming to be running a rescue organization.

The 63 dogs seized yesterday, Jan. 4, were suffering from medical and behavioural problems, and were examined by veterinarians before finding care at various SPCA locations, according to B.C. SPCA media release.

“The B.C. SPCA works closely with the many reputable rescue organizations that operate here in B.C. and we strongly support the work that they do,” said senior officer of protection and stakeholder relations for the B.C. SPCA Eileen Drever in the release. “However, in cases where an individual or group causes or allows animals to be in distress, we have to ensure that these animals are protected and receive the care that they urgently need.”

Drever said the dogs were living in a garage and some rooms in the house in unsanitary, overcrowded conditions with high ammonia levels from urine.

The dogs taken from the site were primarily small and medium sized, and included a mix of breeds.

“It takes weeks or months to counter-condition animals,” SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk told iNFOnews.ca. “We are doing everything we can to help them. They definitely had medical issues but it was more about the conditions they were being kept in. We are confident we can work with them to get them as healthy as possible as soon as possible."

She wouldn’t characterize the situation the dogs were found in as a puppy mill.

“Sometimes people don’t provide the proper care so if people are looking to rescue an animal it is important to go to the site where the animals are kept, not meet somewhere else. If the conditions are poor, please phone the B.C. SPCA hotline.”
