Summer in the Okanagan Valley is synonymous with sunny, warm days perfect for outdoor activities and endless fun. However, the soaring temperatures can sometimes be overwhelming. Here are some tips to stay cool and enjoy the best of what the Okanagan has to offer.

Hydration is Key

Staying hydrated during the summer months is crucial. The high temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration, especially when you're active. Carry a reusable water bottle wherever you go and make it a habit to take frequent sips of water. You can also incorporate hydrating foods into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and strawberries.

Sunscreen is a Must

Protecting your skin from the sun's harsh rays is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every two hours, particularly if you are spending extended periods outdoors. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, and your feet if you're wearing sandals.

Go Swimming

What better way to cool down than taking a dip in one of the many lakes that dot the Okanagan Valley? Whether it's Okanagan Lake, Skaha Lake, or Kalamalka Lake, you’re never too far from a refreshing swim. Swimming is not only a fun activity but also an excellent way to stay cool and active.

Ensure Your Air Conditioner is Working Effectively

Before the peak of the summer heat arrives, it’s wise to check that your air conditioning unit is working efficiently. Regular maintenance can prevent unexpected breakdowns. Clean or replace filters, and if necessary, get a professional to inspect the unit. A cool home will be a welcome respite from the outside heat.

Seek Out Shady Areas

When planning a picnic or spending time outdoors, seek out shady areas in parks or trails. Trees and shelters can significantly reduce the heat and provide a much-needed break from the sun. Layering your clothing and wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also help keep you cool.

With these tips, you can make the most of the summer months in the Okanagan Valley. Stay hydrated, protect your skin, take advantage of the lakes for a swim, ensure your air conditioner is in top shape, and seek out shade whenever possible. Enjoy the summer season safely and comfortably.
