More community-wide garage sales are sure to be returning in Kamloops and the Okanagan this spring after a two-year hiatus. Many of the much-loved weekend treasure hunts were cancelled during the past two years because of risks associated with COVID-19.

With warm weather approaching and restrictions loosening, some community spring garage sales are already being planned. While some remain hesitant because of the virus, many thrifty shoppers are circling the dates on their calendars.

“Going to garage sales is OK, if it’s OK with you,” Kamloops resident Deanna Bell said.

Bell is hoping the annual community garage sale in her neighbourhood will be resurrected this spring.

“It is always a great day at this event and many in the community look forward to it,” she said. “Everyone is outside and can maintain very good social distances so it should be a go.”

The annual Crawford Estates neighbourhood garage sale in Kelowna is going ahead in the middle of May, after being cancelled last year. The event is organized and sponsored by local realtor, Ashley Johnson, and includes around 50 participating houses.

“I actually live in Crawford Estates myself with my family and love doing these sorts of things,” Johnson said. “I find the event actually brings the community together and I’m so excited I finally get to do it again this year.”

While some are eager to browse the sales others are planning to host them, having a lot of items to sell that have built up over the pandemic.

Kamloops resident Kier Robertson is preparing to set up at his community-wide garage sale scheduled for end of April.

“We are looking forward to it,” he said. “I’m hoping to get rid of a number of things that aren’t needed anymore.”

Residents can keep their eyes open for signs going up in their communities soon.

“Our community-wide garage sale is back on this year, people are excited and asking about it already,” said president of one of the community associations in Kamloops, Dennis Giesbrecht.
