The first half of the 120 tiny homes for Kelowna residents sleeping rough will be built on city-owned land at 759 Crowley Ave. in the north end of the city’s downtown area

That's just across from the Okanagan Rail Trail where about 100 tents are set up in a city supervised campsite.

“This is an innovative approach that brings swift and meaningful action to our community,” Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas said in a BC government news release. “This addresses housing gaps, helps people transition to safe, dignified shelter and ultimately reduces the number of individuals sheltering outside.”

Work has begun on the site with the aim of opening the homes in early 2024.

The homes are 70 square foot sleeping units but come with heat and light, and the ability for residents to lock their doors.

Washrooms are separate, as are eating areas. The site will be supervised by a support agency 24/7.

BC Housing is funding the project with a $5.4 million grant along with $2.7 million in annual operating funds. The program is set to run for three years.

The location for the other 60 units has yet to be announced.
