Street parking rates in Vernon could increase by 25%
Street parking fees in Vernon could increase by 25% if the city council approves the change.
On Monday, Feb. 12, Vernon's city council will discuss the possibility of increasing street parking fees by 25%. Currently, one hour of street parking costs $1.00, and if the council moves forward with the increase one hour of parking would cost $1.25.
The parking fee increase could bring in an additional $240,000 in revenue to the city yearly.
It would also align Vernon's street parking rates with those of other communities in the Okanagan that price their hourly rates between $1.00 and $2.00 hourly.
The increase would only be for curbside parking, and would not affect the rates of off-street parking and the downtown parkade.
The last time the street parking fee was changed was more than ten years ago when rates went from $0.50 to $1.00.
The council will discuss this bylaw change on Monday, Feb. 12, and if approved the request will move to its second reading at a future council meeting. To approve a bylaw change, a minimum of three total readings are required.
