RCMP pull out all the stops to arrest suspected car thief in Shuswap
RCMP have a suspected car thief in custody after an attempted traffic stop in the Shuswap ended with a person in custody in the North Okanagan.
An officer in Sicamous spotted a vehicle at a gas station that they suspected was stolen at around 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 11. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver rammed the police car and took off.
The officer wasn't injured, according to an RCMP media release.
A call went out to area detachments, Police Dog Services, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, the BC Highway Patrol and Air Services.
The suspect vehicle was travelling south on Highway 97A near Grinrod when it was stopped with a tire deflation device, RCMP said.
The two people in the car ran but the police dog teams tracked them down quickly.
Police didn't say what charges the suspects could be facing, only that a report has been forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service.
“Thanks to the highly coordinated efforts of frontline officers and multiple specialized units, the suspects were taken into custody quickly and without injury to the public or our officers,” RCMP media relations officer Cpl. James Grandy said in the release.
