North Okanagan elementary students join RCMP officers for road safety campaign
Some North Okanagan elementary students were helped out RCMP officers with a road safety campaign this week.
The Think of Me campaign consisted of students interacting with drivers in an effort to remind them to slow down and keep their eyes on the road through school zones, according to an RCMP press release.
Officers from the Vernon North Okanagan detachment gave students from Highland Park Elementary School in Armstrong road safety tips, then the students used what they learned to make artwork or “tickets” to give out to drivers as reminders.

“This is the second time around for the program in our area and again it’s a huge success,” RCMP Cpl. Ted Bowen said in the release.
“Road safety is about influencing drivers to adopt safer habits on the road and prioritize the safety of those around them, especially in areas where children are present. We believe it has a more lasting effect when we can do that in a positive way.”
Students were with officers at a speed check on Wood Avenue in the city to give out their artwork to drivers on Tuesday, March 12.
Think of Me also aims to give younger generations a “sense of responsibility and awareness” about road safety issues.

“They engage in interactive activity to learn about road safety in a fun and memorable way that leaves a lasting impression on them,” Cpl. Bowen said. “One day, when they’re out on the road, hopefully they can reflect on the experience and apply the lessons they’ve learned.”
