Drivers can expect a break from the closures along Highway 97 north of Summerland this Easter long weekend.

The Ministry of Transportation is pausing its work to secure the rockslide site north of Summerland between March 28 and April 1 because of the anticipated traffic, according to a press release.  

The ministry has been closing the highway between Callan Road and Okanagan Lake Provincial Park to blast away rock from the site of the August rockslide.

So far the ministry has removed more than 40,000 cubic metres of rock, and it aims to remove another 20,000 cubic metres by the time the project is finished.

The ministry said it will soon start stabilizing the rock wall with bolts, reducing the need for closures longer than 20 minutes.

Any lengthy closures will be announced ahead of time.
