ICBC offering more than 10% discount for low mileage drivers
Drivers in B.C. who drive less are going to be eligible for a new insurance discount.
ICBC has announced a 10 to 15 per cent discount on insurance for drivers who travel less than 15,000 kilometres a year, according to a press release.
“We know many of our customers are interested in usage-based insurance with cost savings being the top motivating factor and it’s our goal to provide affordable auto insurance to the people living in B.C.,” ICBC president and CEO David Wong said in the release.
“Driving less not only lowers your risk of getting into a crash, it’s also better for the environment. We hope more of our customers will be able to take advantage of the new optional distance-based discount now available.”
The discount is available for drivers renewing their policy on and after June 1.
To get the discount you have to drive less than 15,000 km a year, send two odometer readings a year apart as proof, have a 12-month Autoplan policy with optional coverage and have an eligible vehicle. RVs, motorcycles and collector cars are ineligible.
“We’re working to continue expanding our usage-based insurance options and we encourage drivers to submit their odometer readings online or through their broker when renewing their insurance even if they don’t currently qualify for a distance-based discount,” Wong said. “This will help inform us on potentially new usage-based products that may benefit them in the future.”
Basic insurance drivers can get a 10 per cent discount if they drive under 5,000 km a year.
