A young Blind Bay cyclist on an e-bike is lucky to be alive after colliding with a moving vehicle last week.

Salmon Arm RCMP say the 17-year-old was travelling fast on his bike Aug. 11, when he rounded a corner and hit a vehicle going the opposite direction and got lodged under the vehicle. He was taken to the intensive care unit at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops suffering serious injuries, Staff Sgt. Scott West said in a release.

He said the young rider wasn't wearing a typical cycling helmet, but a motorcycle helmet.

"The construction standards of this helmet, as opposed to a standard bicycle helmet, no doubt minimized the injuries sustained in this collision," he said.
