Car going almost twice speed limit flips on Bennett bridge in West Kelowna
A driver rolled their car going nearly double the speed limit on the William Bennett Bridge in West Kelowna earlier this week.
BC Highway Patrol were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 97 on the bridge in West Kelowna when officers saw a hatchback going 105 km/h in the 60 km/h zone around 5 a.m. on July 9, according to a media release from police.
Before officers could pull the car over, the hatchback hit the centre and right medians, and rolled onto its roof. The driver did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, but they are now prohibited from driving.
BC Highway Patrol wants to remind drivers to stay safe and drive the speed limit.
There have been 13 deaths on Southern Interior highways since July 8, police said.
“Our BC Highway Patrol teams across the Okanagan will continue to coordinate regular speed enforcement across our highways to save lives and reduce injuries,” RCMP Insp. Rob Nason said in the release.
“Speeding is the leading cause of vehicle collision fatalities in British Columbia and I encourage everyone to obey the posted speed limits as deaths related to high speed collisions are entirely preventable.”
