Surveillance footage played an instrumental role in finding a suspected motorcycle thief and lead police to $51,000 worth of stolen vehicles.

It started early in the morning almost two weeks ago when a high-end motorcycle was stolen from a driveway at a home in north Kelowna, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Aug. 27. Investigators used surveillance video to identify the suspect.

Four days later, the stolen KTM motorcycle was spotted by an officer who tried to pull it over, but the rider took off at a high rate of speed even riding on sidewalks to get away.

On Aug. 20, investigators with the RCMP’s target team saw a man with a the same stolen motorcycle on a property in the Glenmore neighbourhood and arrested him.

Officers found and seized five stolen vehicles on the property including three motorcycles, a quad and an RV trailer with a combined value of approximately $51,000.

A 34-year-old Kelowna man was arrested and released on conditions.

“This result was only possible with the assistance of surveillance footage from the area and highlights the importance of the public in assisting police in investigations,” Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Laura Pollock said in the release.

“Our team regularly utilizes surveillance footage from security cameras to gather intelligence and identify suspects and safely apprehend those responsible for motor vehicle thefts and other property crime.”
