A mobile home and workshop in Pinantan Lake in Kamloops burned down on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, leaving a small family and pets stranded out in the cold in need of help.

Former Kamloops resident Michael Zenowski said his father Fred, younger brother James and grandmother were living in the mobile home when the fire started by accident during some home improvement builds.

“It was a complete accident, James moved a heater too close to the ceiling while doing some work,” Michael said. “Basically everything was burned down in two hours.”

No one was injured in the fire nor any other structures on adjacent properties, but the fire destroyed everything the family owns and they don’t have fire insurance.

For roughly two decades the family has been living in the home, with Fred raising his son and looking after his mom who has dementia, supporting the family working as a mechanic out of his shop.

Fred’s workshop and tools were destroyed in the fire, along with the son James’ computer he needs for university in January.

The winter weather has set in, making the cleanup difficult.

“My dad does have a bobcat and I hear people have offered equipment to help out,” Michael said. “Clearing the mess is the focus.”

When asked why there wasn’t fire insurance, Michael speculated it wasn’t an affordable option.

He organized a fundraiser for the family and is grateful for the outpouring of support he’s seeing from the Kamloops and Pinantan communities.

"We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity and support."

Any money donated will go to the rebuild of the home and basic life necessities. Go here to donate.
