Cat survives serious injuries after getting caught in trap in the East Kootenays
A cat caught in an animal trap was found down a remote logging road in the East Kootenays and good Samaritans brought it to a B.C. SPCA shelter for care.
Staff at the East Kootenay branch in Cranbrook noticed a horrible smell and saw an open, circular wound on the cat’s chest, according to a B.C. SPCA media release issued today, Feb. 23.
The cat was rushed to a veterinarian for emergency surgery and the wound turned out to be much more serious than first expected.
“The wound went into his abdomen and they had to remove a lot of dead and dying tissue,” Tia Yakimovitch with the shelter said in the release.
It's believed the cat was experiencing thermal injuries most likely from being trapped somewhere in a recent cold snap, the release said.
The cat was sent to a foster to recover but more health issues came up. There were problems with his stomach and the vet found a new leg lesion. An open wound appeared on the cat’s tail, which later had to be amputated.

Wilson the cat is getting daily care at the animal centre and regular veterinarian visits.
“Despite all that he has been through, Wilson has the most positive attitude and the best personality,” Yakimovitch said. “He gets up to greet staff and volunteers at his kennel door every time they walk in the room and he loves head scratches and sitting on laps.”
As soon as Wilson has recovered from his injuries the SPCA will put him up for adoption.
