Event Description
Annual Walk to Embrace Cultural Diversity Kamloops – Thursday March 21st 2019 – The annual Walk to Embrace Cultural Diversity is on again in 2019! Hosted by Kamloops Immigrant Services and the Kamloops North Shore Business Improvement Association, this event marks the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In Kamloops we mark it with an event highlighting human rights and expressing the social and cultural diversity that makes up our local population which is itself an important piece of our collective identity as a city. The gathering begins at the Wilson heritage house - home of the Kamloops North Shore BIA. We begin at 11am with warm drinks and Indigenous prayer and drumming songs, then words from community leaders. Thereafter we will walk 1km up Tranquille Rd. to Kamloops Immigrant Services (448 Tranquille) for a multicultural celebration. This event has grown beyond our walls and will once again be held under the big tents (with heating if necessary) in front of the great mural wall in our parking area. This event has featured many diverse individuals and groups contributing over the years and has always been well attended – rain or shine. Past performers have included the Good Heart Drum Group, Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society Drummers and singers, N'we Jinan youth singers from around the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc region, Drum Afreaka, Middle East Dance, Indo-Canadian Dancers, Chinese Fan Dancers, Raiden Taiko Drummers, Indigenous Fancy Dance, Henna artist Regini Mehta and more. Come and be a part of this community event, where together we are saying "This is who we are, we are all of us. Together we are better." Kamloops-Cariboo Regional Immigrants Society board, staff, volunteers and members invite everyone to join us for this event as we share a walk, ethnic food, engage in cultural activities and celebrate the diverse community of Kamloops. For more information, please call Kamloops Immigrant Services: 778-470-6101.
